Barcelona missed out on Marco Asensio, after the club’s senior officials tried to haggle over €2million.
Real Madrid eventually stepped in and snatched the player, who scored twice against Barca in four days, as Zinedine Zidane won the Spanish Super Cup 5-1 on aggregate.
It could have been different four years ago when Asensio was only 17.
The player made his breakthrough at local club Mallorca in 2013 and Madrid swooped in to take him to the Santiago Bernabeu, although they agreed to leave him on loan with the second division side for the remainder of the 2014/2015 season.
Los Blancos officials closed on a six-year deal with a transfer fee of just €3.9million on December 5, 2014.
However, Madrid chiefs were only able to step in after Barcelona bosses attempted to haggle on a fee, when they had first option to take him from San Moix. At the time, Mallorca were keen on an immediate deal worth €4.5million in total.
Barca chiefs stalled and looked to pay his fee in instalments – €2.5million up front with €2million in add-ons.
