Impunity is PDP’s bane, says ex-Senate President, Ayu

MAKURDI—Former Senate President, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, has said lack of internal democracy and impunity were the bane of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

                             Sen Iyorchia Ayu Ayu,

who spoke yesterday at a special congress of the party in Makurdi, Benue State, said it was same undemocratic acts that led to Senator Modu Sheriff emerging as National Chairman of the party, who was later unseated by a Supreme Court ruling.

Recalling the history of the opposition party, Ayu said: “What led to the fall of PDP was lack of party democracy and imposition of candidates. “The party, at a time, also started third term agenda, but we fought it to a standstill. If the party continues to impose candidates, you will not win any election and you will also not see people like me.”

Ayu, who recalled that he became Senate President at about 40 years, lamented that young people were no more being availed opportunities to express themselves politically.

“I don’t see why young people shouldn’t be allowed to contest elections; the political space should be opened for young people to run for elective positions,” he added.
